What is Ramadan?
Complete Guide to the Blessed Month
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the most sacred time of the year for Muslims worldwide. It is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community โ a time when over 1.8 billion Muslims unite in worship and spiritual renewal. But Ramadan is much more than abstaining from food and drink. It is a transformative journey that purifies the soul, strengthens faith, and brings believers closer to Allah.
๐ In This Guide:
๐ What is Ramadan?
The word "Ramaแธฤn" comes from the Arabic root "ramida" or "ar-ramad," which means scorching heat or dryness. Scholars say it is called Ramaแธฤn because it burns away sins through fasting, prayer, and sincere repentance. Just as the sun's heat purifies, Ramaแธฤn purifies the heart and soul.
Ramaแธฤn is mentioned by name in the Quran:
๐ Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185
This verse establishes Ramadan's significance: it is the month when the Quran โ the final revelation to humanity โ was sent down.

๐ Why Do Muslims Fast in Ramadan?
Fasting (Sawm) during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it a fundamental obligation for every adult Muslim. The primary purpose of fasting is to develop taqwa (God-consciousness, piety, and awareness of Allah).
๐ Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183
The spiritual goals of fasting include:
- Taqwa: Constant awareness that Allah sees and knows everything.
- Self-discipline: Training the soul to control desires and impulses.
- Empathy: Experiencing hunger to understand the suffering of the less fortunate.
- Gratitude: Appreciating Allah's blessings, especially food and drink.
- Purification: Cleansing the heart from sins and bad habits.
- Spiritual elevation: Strengthening the connection between the servant and Allah.
๐คฒ What Does Fasting in Ramaแธฤn Involve?
Fasting during This blessed month means abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). But the fast is not just physical โ it extends to controlling the tongue, eyes, ears, and heart.
Physical fasting: No eating or drinking from dawn to sunset, no smoking, and abstaining from marital intimacy during fasting hours.
Spiritual fasting: Avoiding lying, backbiting, gossip, and foul language. Controlling anger, lowering the gaze, and focusing the heart entirely on worship and remembrance of Allah.
"Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need for him to abandon his food and drink."
โ Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ ยท Sahih BukhariTrue fasting is a holistic act of worship โ body, mind, and soul together.

๐ The Daily Routine of Ramadan
Suhoor โ Pre-Dawn Meal

Fajr Prayer
After Suhoor, Muslims perform the Fajr (dawn) prayer โ the first of the five daily prayers, beginning the day in worship.
Daytime โ Work, Quran & Dhikr
Muslims carry on with daily life while fasting. Many increase Quran recitation, dhikr, and charity throughout the day.
Iftar โ Breaking the Fast
At sunset (Maghrib), the fast is broken with dates and water following the Sunnah. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The fasting person has at the time of breaking fast a supplication which is not rejected." (Ibn Majah)
Taraweeh Prayer
After Isha prayer, Muslims gather for Taraweeh โ special nightly prayers performed only in this month, often reciting large portions of the Quran.

In the last third of the night, many Muslims wake for Tahajjud, especially during the last 10 nights when Laylatul Qadr occurs.
