Dua of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

The Prayer Every Parent Needs to Make for Their Children

Prophet Ibrahim built the Ka'bah — the House that over a billion Muslims face in every prayer. He established the call to Hajj, still answered four thousand years later. He survived fire, exile, and the command to sacrifice his son. After all of that — at the absolute peak of everything he had built and sacrificed — what did he ask for his children? Not wealth. Not power. Not status. Make them people who establish prayer. If the Friend of Allah, after a lifetime of unmatched sacrifice, considered this his most important request — it is worth understanding exactly what he was asking for, and making the same request for ours.

🤲 The Complete Dua of Prophet Ibrahim

Made after building the Ka'bah — at the peak of everything he had sacrificed for Allah. His greatest concern was not what he had built in stone. It was what would be built in his children's hearts.

📌 What Most Articles Miss: The word Ibrahim chose — "muqeem as-salah" (establisher of prayer) — is significantly different from simply "one who prays." The root "iqamah" means to make something stand upright, firm, and permanent — the same root used in the adhan: "Qad qamat is-salah." Ibrahim was not asking for children who occasionally pray. He was asking for children for whom prayer is a non-negotiable pillar — as upright as a column holding up a building.

📖 When and Why Did Ibrahim Make This Dua?

This supplication comes near the end of Surah Ibrahim — in a sequence of duas he made after completing the greatest physical act of his life: building the Ka'bah with his son Isma'il. He had already survived fire, performed the migration, left his family in the desert, been reunited with his son, built the Ka'bah, established Hajj, and been blessed with a second son in old age. And in that moment — at the absolute peak of everything — his mind went to one question: Will my children maintain their connection to Allah through prayer?

The Full Sequence of Duas in Surah Ibrahim

1
رَبِّ ٱجْعَلْ هَٰذَا بَلَدًا ءَامِنًا
For the community: "Make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits." (14:35)
2
لِيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ
His stated purpose for everything: "I have settled descendants here that they may establish prayer." (14:37) — Prayer was the purpose of the Ka'bah, Zamzam, and Hajj
3
رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡنِي مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي
Our focus — for himself and his descendants: "Make ME an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants." (14:40)
4
رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلۡ دُعَآءِ
Humility after asking: "Our Lord, and accept my supplication." (14:40) — The greatest man of his time still feared his dua might not be accepted
5
رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
For the whole ummah: "Forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day of Judgment." (14:41) — Always expanding outward

📌 The Key Insight: Ibrahim declared the purpose of settling his family in Makkah — before Zamzam, before the Ka'bah, before Hajj — as "that they may establish prayer." Every monumental act of his legacy existed to serve one purpose: the daily connection between his descendants and Allah. If prayer was the foundation of the Ka'bah and Hajj, it must be the foundation of our families too.

🔍 Word-by-Word Breakdown

Each phrase of this dua carries a weight that changes how you recite it — and how you parent.

رَبِّ
Rabbi — "My Lord"

The Foundation of the Request

Not simply "Allah" but "My Lord" — Rabb, the Sustainer and Nurturer. This opening establishes: I am Your servant, You are the One who brings things to completion. What I am about to ask cannot happen without You.

ٱجۡعَلۡنِي
Ij'alni — "Make me"

The Most Important Word — Total Dependence

Not "help me pray." Not "enable me." Not "allow me." Make me. Ja'ala means to create, to form, to bring into being. Ibrahim is declaring: the ability to establish prayer consistently is not something I can produce through willpower alone. It must be created in me by You. If the Friend of Allah needed to ask — so do we.

مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ
Muqeema-s-salati — "Establisher of prayer"

A Pillar — Not an Occasional Practice

"Iqamah" means to make something stand upright and permanent — the same root in the adhan's "Qad qamat is-salah." A muqeem as-salah prays on time every time, with full presence, as the anchor of their day — never abandoned for work, entertainment, or social pressure.

وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي
Wa min dhurriyyati — "And from my descendants"

The Single Most Overlooked Word: "Min"

"From" my descendants — not "all" of them. This single word contains more wisdom than entire parenting books. Ibrahim knew you cannot guarantee righteousness in your children. "Min" means you ask, teach, set the example, and make dua — then you trust. The outcome belongs to Allah alone.

رَبَّنَا
Rabbana — "Our Lord"

From Personal to Communal

The dua began with "Rabbi" — My Lord, personal. Now it shifts to "Rabbana" — Our Lord. The personal request becomes communal, including his descendants, his community, and every Muslim who recites this dua until the Last Day.

وَتَقَبَّلۡ دُعَآءِ
Wa taqabbal du'a' — "And accept my supplication"

A Dua Within the Dua

The dua ends by asking Allah to accept the dua itself. After building the Ka'bah — the holiest structure on earth — Ibrahim still said "accept my supplication." Never assume acceptance. Always ask. Let this be how you close every dua you make.

🙏 Why Did Ibrahim Ask for Prayer Above Everything Else for His Children?

Ibrahim could have asked for anything. He asked for prayer. There are four reasons why — and together they explain everything about Islamic parenting priorities.

1

Prayer is what everything else depends on

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The first matter the servant will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is defective, then the rest of his deeds will be defective." (Tabarani). Remove the pillar — the building falls.

2

Prayer is the direct, daily connection to Allah

In every salah, a person speaks directly to Allah — standing in His presence, bowing before Him, prostrating. Five times a day, every day. No intermediary. No barrier. A child who prays has a direct relationship with their Creator that no one can take away.

3

Prayer prevents what parents fear most

"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing." (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:45). The greatest protection you can give your children is not wealth, status, or connections — it is a living prayer life. A child who genuinely prays is protected from the inside.

4

A praying child is sadaqah jariyah for you

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a person dies, all their deeds end except three — including a righteous child who prays for them." (Sahih Muslim). A praying child is your gift that keeps reaching you even after death. It is the most valuable inheritance you can leave.

📿 The Other Duas of Prophet Ibrahim in the Quran

Ibrahim made more recorded duas in the Quran than almost any other prophet. Together they reveal the complete priorities of a believer's heart — and not one of them asks for wealth, career, or worldly status.

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلۡ مِنَّآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
Rabbana taqabbal minna, innaka Anta-s-Sami'u-l-'Aleem
"Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing." — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127 · Said while building the Ka'bah
✅ Use when: After completing a major act of worship — asking Allah not to reject it
رَبَّنَا وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا مُسۡلِمَيۡنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةًۭ مُّسۡلِمَةًۭ لَّكَ
Rabbana wa-j'alna muslimayni laka wa min dhurriyyatina ummatan muslimatan lak
"Our Lord, make us Muslims in submission to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation in submission to You." — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:128
✅ Use when: Asking for your children and descendants to remain in Islam
رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡ هَـٰذَا بَلَدًا ءَامِنًۭا
Rabbi-j'al hadha baladan aminan
"My Lord, make this a secure city." — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:126 · For Makkah and its people
✅ Use when: Making dua for your city, community, or the safety of Muslims
رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلۡحِسَابُ
Rabbana-ghfir li wa li-walidayya wa lil-mu'mineena yawma yaqumu-l-hisab
"Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." — Surah Ibrahim 14:41
✅ Use when: Asking forgiveness for yourself, your parents, and all Muslims on the Day of Judgment

📌 Notice What Ibrahim Never Asked For: Across all his recorded duas — not once does Ibrahim ask for wealth, career success, social status, or worldly achievement for his children. Every dua is spiritual. This is a complete curriculum of what a parent's priorities should be.

🕌 When Should You Recite This Dua?

🕌

After every obligatory prayer — five times a day, every day. That is 1,825 times per year you are asking Allah to establish prayer in your children's hearts

🙏

In sujood — "The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration, so increase your supplications therein." (Sahih Muslim) — Use that closeness for your children's salah

🌙

In the last third of the night — when Allah asks "Who is calling upon Me?" — this is the dua to call with, for your children sleeping in the next room

🌅

Before waking your child for Fajr — make this dua silently before you call them. You are asking the One who controls hearts to soften the heart you are about to wake

👶

When you are pregnant — begin before they are born. Ibrahim thought in terms of generations. The dua you make for a child in the womb is your first act of parenting

🎂

When your child reaches age seven — the Prophet ﷺ said: "Command your children to pray when they become seven years old." (Abu Dawood). Intensify this dua as that milestone approaches

😔

When your child struggles with prayer — when they delay, miss, or resist salah — respond with this dua privately. Words alone cannot turn a heart. Only Allah can do that.

🌍

For future generations you will never meet — Ibrahim made this dua for descendants thousands of years ahead, including you today. Make it for yours. A sincere dua today could still produce fruit in your great-grandchildren's lives.

📿 How to Recite with Full Sincerity — 6 Steps

1

Ask for yourself before your children

When you say "make ME an establisher of prayer" — pause on that. How is your own salah? Do you pray Fajr consistently? Do you rush Asr? Ask genuinely for yourself first. The dua for your children will be more sincere once you have honestly confronted your own practice.

2

Picture your children when you say "my descendants"

Visualize their faces. Think of each child by name. If you don't have children yet, picture the ones you hope for. Make the dua personal and specific — not abstract and general.

3

Prepare with the right conditions

Make wudu if possible. Face the qiblah. Raise your hands — the Sunnah of dua. Choose the best times: sujood, after obligatory prayers, the last third of the night, before waking your child for Fajr.

4

Close with "taqabbal du'a'" every time

After this dua — and after every dua you make — close with "Rabbana wa taqabbal du'a'." Let Ibrahim's humility about acceptance be yours. Never assume your dua was worthy. Always ask Allah to accept it.

5

Combine the dua with action

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Command your children to pray when they become seven years old, and discipline them for it when they become ten." (Abu Dawood). The dua is not a replacement for parenting — it is the spiritual foundation beneath the parenting. Both are required.

6

Be consistent over years, not weeks

Ibrahim's duas shaped prophetic lineages across thousands of years. Your consistency in making this dua over months and years is itself an act of trust in Allah's timing. The seed and the harvest are not always in the same season.

✨ 6 Lessons for Every Parent Today

Lesson 1
🙏
Ask for Prayer Before Asking for Anything Else

Ibrahim built the Ka'bah and asked for prayer. He established Hajj and asked for prayer. He survived fire, migration, and sacrifice — and asked for prayer. If everything in Islamic history existed to serve salah, then salah must come before everything else we ask for our children.

Lesson 2
🪞
Fix Your Own Salah Before Making Dua for Your Children's

"Make ME an establisher of prayer" comes first. Not "make my children." The dua begins with self-accountability. A parent who rushes through or skips their own prayers while demanding prayer from their children has the priorities backwards — and children always notice.

Lesson 3
🌱
You Cannot Force Guidance — But You Can Ask the One Who Can Give It

"Min dhurriyyati" — from my descendants, not all. Ibrahim was realistic. He could not guarantee righteousness in every child. Neither can you. What you can do is ask the One who can guarantee it — and trust the rest to Him.

Lesson 4
Think Generationally — Your Duas Today Affect Descendants You Will Never Meet

Ibrahim made this dua for you — thousands of years before you were born. His dua is part of why you are Muslim today. The duas you make for your children's children are a real investment, longer-lasting than any financial inheritance you could leave.

Lesson 5
🙇
Acceptance Is Never Assumed — Always Ask Allah

Ibrahim ended every great act and every great dua with humility: "Accept this from us." "Accept my supplication." After building the Ka'bah. Never assume. The humility to ask for acceptance is itself a condition for receiving it.

Lesson 6
👶
A Praying Child Is the Greatest Gift You Can Leave Behind

The Prophet ﷺ said a righteous child who prays for their parents is one of three deeds that outlive death. Not wealth. Not fame. A child who prays. Ibrahim understood: the greatest legacy is not what you build in stone — it is what you build in hearts.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q
What is the dua of Prophet Ibrahim in Arabic?
The primary dua is: رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡنِي مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِيۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلۡ دُعَآءِ — "My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication." (Surah Ibrahim 14:40)
Q
What does "muqeem as-salah" mean in Ibrahim's dua?
"Muqeem as-salah" means someone who establishes prayer as a standing pillar — not just someone who occasionally prays. The root "iqamah" means to make something upright, firm, and permanent. It is the same root in the adhan's "Qad qamat is-salah." Ibrahim was asking for prayer to be non-negotiable in his life and his descendants' lives — as upright as a column holding up a building.
Q
When did Prophet Ibrahim make this dua?
Ibrahim made this dua after building the Ka'bah with his son Isma'il — at the peak of his life's work and sacrifice. It comes as part of a sequence of duas in Surah Ibrahim (14:35-41), all made after completing the most monumental acts of his prophetic mission.
Q
Why did Ibrahim say "from my descendants" and not "all my descendants"?
The word "min" (from/among) is intentional. Ibrahim knew that guidance is in Allah's hands — not every descendant would be righteous. Even prophets had children who did not follow the truth. "Min" reflects both realism and humility: he asked for what he could ask for, and left the outcome to Allah.
Q
Can I recite this dua even if I don't have children yet?
Absolutely. Make it for your future children and descendants. Ibrahim made this dua generationally — for people who would be born thousands of years after him, including Muslims alive today. Your dua today can be planting seeds for generations you will never meet.
Q
What other duas did Prophet Ibrahim make in the Quran?
Ibrahim made several significant duas: "Our Lord, accept this from us" while building the Ka'bah (2:127), "Make us Muslims in submission to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation" (2:128), "Make this a secure city" for Makkah (2:126), and "Forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day of Judgment" (14:41). Notably, not one of them asks for wealth, status, or worldly success for his children.
Q
How is this dua connected to Hajj?
Ibrahim's stated purpose for settling his family in Makkah and building the Ka'bah was "that they may establish prayer" (14:37). The Ka'bah that billions face in prayer, the Zamzam they drink, the Hajj they perform — all of it traces back to this one intention: that his descendants would pray. Every Hajj is an answer to Ibrahim's dua for prayer.

After Everything — He Asked for Prayer

Ibrahim built the Ka'bah with his hands. He established the Hajj that billions still perform. He survived fire, exile, and the command to sacrifice his son. He shaped the prophetic lineage that produced the final messenger.

And when he stood at the peak of all of it — after everything — he raised his hands and asked for one thing for his children:

Make them people who establish prayer.

Not famous. Not wealthy. Not powerful. Praying.

Because Ibrahim understood what we sometimes forget: if they have prayer, they have their connection to Allah. And if they have that — they have everything that actually matters.

رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡنِي مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِيۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلۡ دُعَآءِ

May Allah make us and our descendants from those who establish prayer. May He place in our children's hearts a love for salah that no force in this world can remove. May our lineage pray until the Day of Judgment, and may we meet them in Paradise.
