Life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The Seal of the Prophets — The Mercy to All Worlds

Born an orphan. Raised by strangers. Known for truth in a city of falsehood. Chosen at 40 to carry the final message to all of humanity. Persecuted for 13 years. Forced to leave his home. He built a community, defended it in battle, and returned to Mecca — the city that had expelled him — without a single act of revenge. He was asked to choose between life and meeting his Lord, and he chose his Lord. He left behind two things: a book unchanged for over 1400 years, and an example that 1.8 billion people still follow. This is the life of the greatest human being who ever walked the earth — peace and blessings be upon him.

🌙 Birth and Early Childhood

Muhammad ﷺ was born on a Monday, 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, 570 CE — the Year of the Elephant — in Mecca, from the noble tribe of Quraysh, the family of Banu Hashim. That same year, an army led by Abraha marched on Mecca with elephants to destroy the Ka'bah. Allah sent flocks of birds carrying stones to destroy the army. The Ka'bah was protected. And into this world, the final messenger was born.

His father Abdullah died before — or shortly after — his birth. His mother Aminah raised him for six years, then died on the journey home from visiting his father's grave. His grandfather Abdul-Muttalib took him in, then died when Muhammad was 8. His uncle Abu Talib raised him as his own — and would protect him for decades, even without ever accepting Islam.

📌 The Orphan Who Would Become the Mercy to All Worlds: He lost his father before birth, his mother at 6, his grandfather at 8. Every pillar of support was taken, one after another. The one who would carry the greatest responsibility in human history began with the least worldly foundation. This is not coincidence. It is the formation of a man who would depend entirely on Allah.

Following Arab custom, the infant Muhammad was sent to Halimah al-Sa'diyah, a Bedouin wet nurse. Her household — previously in drought and poverty — was blessed with abundance the moment he arrived. He stayed with her for four to five years. While there, a miraculous event occurred: angels came, opened his chest, cleansed his heart, and returned him — a purification that scholars connect to his preparation for prophethood.

⭐ Character and Youth Before Prophethood

Before a single verse of the Quran was revealed, before prophethood, before any religious claim — the people of Mecca already knew him by two names: Al-Sadiq (The Truthful) and Al-Amin (The Trustworthy). He never lied. He never worshipped idols. He worked as a shepherd — as every prophet before him had — and then as a merchant, always with integrity.

"Every prophet was a shepherd." When asked, "Even you, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Yes, I used to tend sheep for the people of Mecca."

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ · Sahih Bukhari

The Black Stone — Leadership Before Prophethood

When Muhammad was about 35, the Quraysh were rebuilding the Ka'bah. Different tribes nearly went to war over who would have the honor of placing the Black Stone. Muhammad ﷺ proposed a solution: lay the stone on a cloth, have all tribes lift together, and let him place it at the end. Every tribe was honored. War was averted. This was the wisdom of a man not yet called a prophet — already displaying the qualities that would define his mission.

Marriage to Khadijah رضي الله عنها

At 25, he married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid — a 40-year-old wealthy businesswoman who had employed him and was struck by his honesty and character. She proposed to him. They had a loving, devoted marriage for 25 years. She was the first to believe in him. She was his confidant through the most terrifying night of his life. He would still mention her with love and longing years after her death.

📌 Before the mission came the man: Everything he would need to carry the final message — truthfulness, trustworthiness, wisdom, humility, the experience of poverty and hardship — was built into him before the first word of revelation was spoken. Allah does not send unprepared messengers.

📖 The Beginning of Prophethood — The First Revelation

Muhammad ﷺ had a habit of retreating to Cave Hira on Mount Nur, outside Mecca — spending days in solitude, contemplation, and worship. In the month of Ramadan, in the year he turned 40, everything changed.

👼

Angel Jibreel Appeared

He said one word: "Read!" (Iqra). Muhammad ﷺ replied: "I cannot read." — He was unlettered. The angel embraced him tightly, released him, and said it again. Three times this happened.

📖

The First Verses

"Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous. Who taught by the pen. Taught man that which he knew not." (Surah Al-Alaq 96:1-5) — The first words of the final revelation.

🏠

He Rushed Home Trembling

"Cover me! Cover me!" (Zammiluni!) — Terrified, shaking, he came to Khadijah. She wrapped him and held him. Then she said the words that defined their partnership.

❤️

Khadijah's Response

"Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your relatives, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously, and assist those afflicted with calamities." — She recognized the man before she could understand the message. (Sahih Bukhari)

She took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal — a Christian scholar of the scriptures — who confirmed: "This is the Angel that was sent to Prophet Musa. I wish I were young and could live to see the day when your people will drive you out." Muhammad was stunned: "Will they drive me out?" Waraqah replied: "Yes. No one brought what you have brought except that he was treated with hostility."

📌 The Prophethood Began in a Cave — Not a Palace: No army. No wealth. No political backing. An unlettered man in a cave, trembling, wrapped in a blanket, comforted by his wife. The most consequential moment in human history after creation began in complete smallness — because that is how Allah works.

⚔️ The Meccan Years — Da'wah and Persecution

For the first three years, the message spread quietly. The first to believe were:

👩

Khadijah رضي الله عنها

First woman and first believer — his wife, his greatest supporter

👦

Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه

First child to believe — his young cousin, raised in his household

👨

Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه

First free adult man — his closest companion, later As-Siddiq

🕊️

Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه

First freed slave to believe — devoted companion until martyrdom

In year three, the command came: "And warn your closest kindred." (Quran 26:214). He climbed Mount Safa and called the Quraysh together, asking: "If I told you an army was behind this mountain coming to attack you — would you believe me?" They said yes. He announced the message. His uncle Abu Lahab cursed him. From that day, the persecution began in earnest.

The Persecution

The weak and the poor bore the worst of it. Bilal was taken to the desert, laid on burning sand, with a boulder placed on his chest — Ahad, Ahad (One, One) was all he said. Sumayyah and her husband Yasir were tortured; she became the first martyr in Islam. Ammar was tormented. The Prophet ﷺ could not protect them all — but he never stopped the mission.

The Quraysh then imposed a total boycott on Banu Hashim — no trade, no marriage, complete isolation in a valley — for three full years. Severe hunger, hardship, and suffering. The boycott was eventually lifted when even some Quraysh leaders could not stomach what they were doing.

📌 What He Was Offered and What He Refused: The leaders came with an offer: wealth, kingship, the most beautiful women in Arabia — if he would stop. His response: "O uncle, if they placed the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand on condition that I abandoned this mission, I would not abandon it until Allah has made it victorious or I perish in its cause." There was no price for the truth.

💔 The Year of Sorrow — and the Journey to Ta'if

In the 10th year of prophethood, two losses came close together. Abu Talib — his uncle, his protector, the man who had stood between him and the Quraysh for decades — died. And then Khadijah — his wife of 25 years, his first believer, his anchor — died. The Prophet called this year Am al-Huzn: the Year of Sorrow.

Without Abu Talib's protection, the Quraysh grew bolder. They threw garbage on him. Thorns were placed in his path. A man threw intestines on him while he prayed — his daughter Fatimah came and washed it away, weeping. He traveled to Ta'if seeking support and protection from the tribe of Thaqif.

They mocked him. They refused to listen. They incited the children and slaves to chase him out, throwing stones until his shoes filled with blood. He sat in an orchard, bleeding, and made a dua that reveals everything about who he was:

"O Allah, to You I complain of my weakness, my lack of resources, and my lowliness before people. O Most Merciful, You are the Lord of the weak, and You are my Lord. To whom do You entrust me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy to whom You have given power over me? If You are not displeased with me, I do not care. But Your mercy is more expansive for me..."

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ · The Dua of Ta'if · Considered one of the most moving duas in Islamic history

Angel Jibreel appeared with the Angel of the Mountains, who said: "I am ready to crush them between the two mountains if you wish." The Prophet ﷺ refused: "No. For I hope that Allah will bring forth from their descendants people who will worship Allah alone." Stoned, bleeding, alone — he prayed for his attackers' children. That is who he was.

🌟 Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj — The Night Journey and Ascension

After the depths of the Year of Sorrow, Allah gave His Prophet one of the greatest gifts in creation: a journey through it all. In a single night, Angel Jibreel came with Al-Buraq — a heavenly mount — and Muhammad ﷺ was taken from Mecca to Jerusalem (Masjid al-Aqsa), where he led all previous prophets in prayer. Then he ascended through the seven heavens, meeting Adam, Yahya and Isa, Yusuf, Idris, Harun, Musa, and Ibrahim — the family of prophethood, welcoming their final brother.

He was taken to Sidrat al-Muntaha — the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary, the highest point of creation. He saw Paradise and Hell. And there, directly from Allah, he received the gift of the five daily prayers — the daily meeting between a believer and their Lord.

📌 Why the Mi'raj Matters Spiritually: He was taken up after his lowest point on earth. When Ta'if was done, when the Year of Sorrow had passed, when he had been expelled and rejected — Allah brought him to His presence. The pattern is not random: the deepest lows precede the highest elevation. This is Allah's way with those He loves.

When he returned and told the Quraysh, most mocked him. Some who had believed left Islam. Abu Bakr was asked about it and said: "If he said it, then I believe him. I believe in something farther than that!" — earning forever the title As-Siddiq, The Truthful One.

🕌 The Hijrah — Migration to Medina

During the Hajj season, Muhammad ﷺ had been calling tribes to Islam. People from Yathrib (later Medina) accepted. Two pledges were made — first 12 men, then 73 men and 2 women. They invited him to their city. Allah gave permission to migrate, and the Muslims began leaving Mecca quietly, in small groups.

When most had left, the Quraysh met in council: they would choose one man from each tribe to strike Muhammad ﷺ simultaneously — spreading the guilt so that Banu Hashim could not take revenge on any single tribe. Allah informed His Prophet of the plot.

🛏️

Ali Sleeps in His Place

Muhammad ﷺ asked his young cousin Ali to sleep in his bed wearing his green cloak — to deceive the assassins surrounding the house, and to return the valuables people had entrusted to the Prophet.

🚶

He Walked Past His Would-Be Killers Unseen

As he left the house — surrounded by armed men — he recited Surah Ya-Sin and scattered dust before them. Allah made them blind to him. He walked through them all and was not seen.

🕳️

Three Days in Cave Thawr

He and Abu Bakr hid in Cave Thawr for three days. The Quraysh searched everywhere. A spider spun a web over the cave entrance; a dove laid eggs at the opening. The trackers came, looked, and left: "No one has entered here." Abu Bakr whispered his fear. The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." (Quran 9:40)

🐪

Arrival in Medina

He arrived to the whole city coming out to greet him. He let his camel choose where to stop — it stopped at land belonging to two orphans. He bought the land. On it, he built Masjid an-Nabawi — the first mosque of the Islamic state.

📌 The Hijrah as the New Beginning: The Islamic calendar begins not with his birth, not with the first revelation, but with the Hijrah. Because the Hijrah is when the individual mission became a community — when Islam moved from surviving to building. That transition is worth marking as Year 1.

🏙️ Medina — Building the Islamic State

He immediately established brotherhood between the Muhajirin (migrants from Mecca) and Ansar (helpers of Medina) — pairing each migrant with a Medinan who would share everything with them. He created the Constitution of Medina — one of the earliest written civic documents in history, defining the rights and responsibilities of all people in the community, Muslim and non-Muslim.

Over the next 10 years, the Muslim community faced and overcame a series of military, political, and spiritual challenges:

EventYear (AH)What HappenedKey Lesson
Battle of Badr2 AH313 Muslims vs. 1000 Quraysh — decisive Muslim victory. Angels assisted.✦ Allah's support is real
Battle of Uhud3 AHMuslims winning, then archers disobeyed orders. Losses followed. The Prophet ﷺ was injured.⚠ Obedience matters
Battle of the Trench5 AH10,000-strong coalition vs. Medina. Muslims dug a trench (Salman al-Farsi's idea). Enemy retreated. Allah sent wind and angels.✦ Strategy + tawakkul
Treaty of Hudaybiyyah6 AHQuraysh stopped Muslims from Umrah. A treaty was signed that seemed unfavorable. Allah called it "a clear victory." (Quran 48:1)✦ Allah's plan > our plans
Conquest of Mecca8 AHThe city surrendered with almost no bloodshed. He entered with head bowed in humility. He forgave everyone. "Go, you are free."✦ Forgiveness, not revenge
Battle of Tabuk9 AHLong march toward the Byzantine border — enemy didn't appear. Delegations came to embrace Islam.✦ Strength invites peace

📌 The Conquest of Mecca: The city that had expelled him, tortured his companions, killed his people — surrendered. He entered with his head bowed. He stood at the Ka'bah and recited: "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed, falsehood is bound to depart." (Quran 17:81). Then he turned to the people who had done all of this to him and said: "Go. You are free." (Dhhabu antum at-tulaqaa.) This single act converted more people than any battle ever could.

🤲 The Final Year and Farewell Sermon

"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion."
— Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:3 · Revealed on the day of Arafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage · When Umar heard this verse, he wept.

In the 10th year of Hijrah, more than 100,000 companions accompanied the Prophet ﷺ in Hajjat al-Wada — the Farewell Pilgrimage. On the plain of Arafat, he delivered the final sermon that would be his last public address to all of humanity:

1

Human equality: "All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black over a white — except by piety and good action."

2

Sanctity of life and property: "Your lives and your properties are sacred to one another like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours."

3

Rights of women: "Treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers."

4

The two things he left behind: "I leave among you two things — if you hold fast to them, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah."

5

His final question: He asked, "Have I conveyed the message?" 100,000 voices answered: "Yes!" He raised his finger to the sky and said three times: "O Allah, bear witness."

His Final Days and Passing

He fell ill shortly after returning. He asked permission from his wives to stay in the room of Aisha رضي الله عنها. Abu Bakr led the prayers in his place. He freed his slaves and gave away what remained of his wealth. On a Monday morning — the same day of the week he was born — in the lap of Aisha, at age 63, he passed away. His last words reached for the highest: "Al-Rafiq al-A'la" — the Highest Companion. He chose Allah over life.

"Whoever worshipped Muhammad — Muhammad is dead. But whoever worshipped Allah — Allah is alive and never dies."

— Abu Bakr As-Siddiq رضي الله عنه · Then he recited Surah Ali 'Imran 3:144 · And the companions accepted what they could not bear.

🌍 His Character and Legacy

Those who lived with him describe a man whose character was the Quran made human. Aisha رضي الله عنها was asked about his character — she replied: "His character was the Quran." He was:

🗣️
Truthful — Al-Sadiq
Never lied, even before prophethood. The Quraysh trusted him with their valuables even while opposing him.
🤝
Trustworthy — Al-Amin
Even his enemies left their belongings with him for safekeeping during the persecutions.
❤️
Merciful — Raheem
Wept for the suffering of others. Shortened prayers when hearing a child cry. Forbade cruelty to animals.
🙇
Humble — Tawadu'
Mended his own clothes, helped with housework, refused to be treated as special in sitting arrangements.
🛡️
Brave — Shujaa'
Ali said he was always in front when fighting was fierce — the bravest person he had ever seen in battle.
🙏
Grateful Worshipper
Prayed until his feet swelled. When asked why — all his sins were forgiven — he said: "Should I not be a grateful servant?"

✨ 8 Timeless Lessons for Every Believer

Lesson 1
Perseverance Through Hardship — Never Abandon the Mission

13 years of persecution in Mecca. Insults, violence, boycott, exile, the death of everyone he loved. He never stopped, never negotiated the truth, never made it easier for himself by compromising the message. When facing difficulty in any good work — remember his patience and persistence.

Lesson 2
🕊️
Mercy Even to Enemies — Forgiveness That Opens Hearts

He forgave the Meccans who tortured his companions for over a decade. He prayed for the people of Ta'if who stoned him. His forgiveness at the Conquest of Mecca produced more believers than any battle. Forgiveness is not weakness — it is the most powerful da'wah tool that exists.

Lesson 3
🙇
Leadership Is Service — Not Status

The most powerful man in Arabia mended his own clothes, milked his own goat, helped his wives with housework, and refused preferential treatment in gatherings. True leadership serves the people it leads. The moment you start expecting to be served, you have already lost the quality that made you worth following.

Lesson 4
⚖️
Justice for All — Without Exception or Favoritism

His final sermon declared equality 1400 years before modern human rights movements. He said explicitly: no Arab over non-Arab, no white over black, no tribe over tribe — only piety. Fight every form of racism, tribalism, and injustice. His message was not for one people. It was for all people.

Lesson 5
🌗
Balance in Life — No Dimension Neglected

He was a husband who played with his wives, a father who let his grandchildren climb on his back in prayer, a leader who consulted his companions, a worshipper who stood in prayer until his feet swelled. He showed that worship and family and community and rest are not in competition. They are all part of the same complete life.

Lesson 6
🌱
Kindness to All Creation — Not Just to People

He forbade cruelty to animals. He once shortened a prayer because he heard a child crying. He told the story of a woman who entered Jannah because she gave water to a thirsty dog. Compassion was not selective for him — it extended to every living thing. Let your kindness have no species limit.

Lesson 7
🏔️
The Lowest Points Precede the Highest Elevation

The Year of Sorrow — both his protectors gone, stoned in Ta'if, alone — was directly followed by Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj: a journey to the presence of Allah. The deepest trench preceded the Hijrah and the building of the Islamic state. When you are at your lowest, look up. The pattern in his life is a promise.

Lesson 8
🤲
Trust in Allah — Even When There Is No Human Solution

In the cave, surrounded by trackers, Abu Bakr whispered his fear. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not grieve — Allah is with us." At the sea with Pharaoh's army behind them, he was certain before the staff was raised. In every impossible moment, his certainty in Allah did not waver. Let that certainty be your inheritance from him.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q
Who was Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (570–632 CE) was the final messenger sent by Allah to all of humanity — the Seal of the Prophets (Khatam an-Nabiyyin). Born an orphan in Mecca, he received the first revelation at 40, endured 13 years of persecution, migrated to Medina in 622 CE, established the first Islamic state, united Arabia under tawhid, and passed away having completed the mission. He left behind the Quran and his Sunnah as guidance for all time.
Q
What was the first revelation received by the Prophet ﷺ?
The first revelation came in Ramadan when he was 40 years old in Cave Hira. Angel Jibreel appeared, embraced him three times, and recited the first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq: "Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous. Who taught by the pen. Taught man that which he knew not." (Quran 96:1-5)
Q
What was the Hijrah and why does the Islamic calendar begin with it?
The Hijrah (622 CE) was the migration from Mecca to Medina, made after Allah gave permission and the Muslims had established a welcoming community there. The Islamic calendar begins with it — not with the Prophet's birth or the first revelation — because the Hijrah marks the transition from individual mission to community-building. It was the moment Islam moved from surviving to establishing.
Q
What happened when the Prophet ﷺ conquered Mecca?
In 8 AH (630 CE), Mecca surrendered with almost no bloodshed. The Prophet ﷺ entered with his head bowed in humility, not in triumph. He stood at the Ka'bah and recited from the Quran. Then he turned to the people who had tortured him, expelled him, and killed his companions for over a decade and said: "Go. You are free." (Dhhabu antum at-tulaqaa). This act of forgiveness resulted in mass conversion.
Q
What were the Prophet's ﷺ last words?
In the lap of his wife Aisha رضي الله عنها, on the morning of a Monday in Rabi' al-Awwal (the same day of the week he was born), his last words were "Al-Rafiq al-A'la" — The Highest Companion — choosing to be with Allah rather than remain in this world. He passed away at age 63, having completed his mission.
Q
Why is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ considered the greatest human being?
By every measure — spiritual, moral, historical, and practical — no individual has had a more profound and lasting impact on humanity. He received and transmitted the final complete guidance from Allah. He embodied that guidance perfectly in his own character. He transformed an entire region from tribalism and idolatry to a civilization based on justice, mercy, and monotheism. And his legacy continues — unchanged and living — in the lives of 1.8 billion people today.

The Best Example for All Time

Born an orphan. Became a shepherd. Known for truth and trust before anyone knew his name as a prophet. Received the greatest responsibility in human history at 40. Persecuted for 13 years. Migrated with nothing. Built a civilization. Conquered without revenge. Forgave without limit. Taught without discrimination. Lived with humility his entire life. Died having said the last words that defined him: Al-Rafiq al-A'la. The Highest Companion. He chose Allah over everything — one final time.

He said: "I leave behind me two things — the Quran and my Sunnah. If you follow these, you will never go astray."

1400 years later, his message is unchanged. His example still guides. His ummah continues. And in every corner of the earth, every day, his name is raised in the adhan — Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah.

When you feel weak — remember his strength. When you face rejection — remember his patience. When you want revenge — remember his forgiveness. When you doubt your worth — remember that Allah chose him as an orphan. When you forget your purpose — remember his mission.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّد

May Allah's peace, blessings, and mercy be upon him, his family, his companions, and all who follow him until the Day of Judgment.
